Your first inclination of Hawaii is certainly NOT chocolate; however, if you plan to visit the island of Kauai then you may want to reconsider.
Kauai is a lush land of waterfalls and hiking, but it's also home to the United States only chocolate producer and farm. You'll find Lydgate Farms housed in the hills of Kapa'a just North of the Lihue airport.
There are plenty of places that produce chocolate across the nation, but Lydgate is the only one growing cacao, harvesting and producing chocolate; enough to maintain supply and demand for such product. The farm also produces vanilla and honey for production purposes as well harvests local fruits that are usually provided to near by locals for little to nothing.
Cacao, like many other Hawaiian crops are not inherently native to the islands, but due to the nature of the climate they grow very well here! Pineapples, for instance (grown mainly on O'ahu) are naturally from South America (Costa Rica) and were brought here from explorers.
Hawaii's history lends tails of food and seeds brought from other native lands for cultivation as Sugar was initially the main crop but again, not native. When you visit Lydgate, you will enjoy a long history of Hawaiian fruits and seeds along with tastings of the beloved cacao and of course, Chocolate!
